Abhyangam (General ayurvedis massage)

Abhyanga is a Sanskrit word which means oil application. According to ayurveda , vata (one among the three doshas ) is mainly responsible for tactile sensation and the tactile sensation is through the skin.Oil application is best for the skin. Imbalance of vata dosha cause diseases.In today’s fast life vata increases due to unhealthy regimen and food habits.Due to all these reasons, abhyanga plays an important role to decrease vata dosha and thereby helps to achieve longevity.Abhyangam can be done by one or two therapists.Depending on the body constitution and condition of the person, the physician will decide suitable herbal oil for performing abhyangam.After the application of pre-selected warm medicated oil, the person should lay down on the droni {massage table). The therapist will do specialized techniques on the person.In general, the duration of abhyangam is about 60 minutes.

The name shirodhara comes from the Sanskrit words –shira means head and dhara means flow.This is one among the traditional ayurvedic treatments which involves gently pouring warm herbal oils over the forehead in an oscillating manner for a particular period of time,Shirodhara stimulates marmas/vital points involved in the head and improves blood circulation.It reduces level of stress hormones such as adrenaline and nor-adrenaline and thereby calms the mind. The calming effect produced by shirodhara is similar to that obtained with meditation.It can also done in healthy individuals.Studies have proved that shirodhara is a safe option to improve sleep quality among people who have sleep problems.Depends on the body constitution and condition of the patient, the duration may vary from 30-60 minutes.

Elakizhi / Patra potala sweda (Leaf bundle massage)

Ela means leaves and kizhi means bolus. This is one among the sudation process using herbal leaves, practiced by kerala vaidyas. In this procedure the fresh leaves of vata pacifying property such as calatropis gigentica, ricinus communis, tamarind, moringa oleifera, vitex nigundo etc are collected, cut into small pieces and mixed with grated coconut, lemon, turmeric, rocksalt etc. Then these are fried in suitable herbal oil. They are divided into four equal parts and tied in a linen cloth in the form of boluses. These are dipped into warm medicated oil and used for massaging the body. A gentle massage should be given to the entire body for about 10-15 minutes before applying boluses. The massage with heated boluses induces profuse sudation, which helps in the fomentation process. Duration of elakizhi may vary from 30-45 minutes depends on the body constitution and condition of the patient.

Podikizhi / Choorna pinda sweda (Powder bundle massage)

Podi/choorna means powder, kizhi/pinda means bolus and sweda means fomentation. The sudation given by using a bolus which is made of different combination of medicated powders is called as podikizhi/choorna pinda sweda. The suitable herbs are cleaned, dried and powdered prior to the application of podikizhi. Then these powders are tied into a bolus using linen cloth. According to the patient’s conditions or instruction by the physician, oil may or may not be applied over the body. These herbal powder bolus is heated and applied over the affected area in soft punches.The bolus is then heated intermittently during the whole course of the treatment. The duration may vary from 30-45minutes depends on the body constitution of the patient.

Njavarakizhi / Shashtika shali pinda sweda [Rice pudding bundle massage]

This is a unique treatment procedure practiced by kerala ayurveda physicians. It is called njavara because navara rice is the main ingredient in this preparation. This rice is having different medicinal properties such as nourishing, rejuvenative, immunity booster, diuretics etc.In this procedure the njavara rice is boiled in the mixture of milk and herbal decoction. It is then tied in a muslin bag and made into a bolus. Prior to the application of bolus, the patient’s body should be massaged with medicated oil. The boluses are then applied over the body by dipping in warm mixture of milk and decoction intermittently. The duration of the treatment may vary from 30-45 minutes depends upon the body constitution and condition of the patient.

Dhanyamla dhara

This is a procedure in which dhanyamla (prepared by the process of fermentation) is poured all over the body or affected area in a continuous stream for a particular duration in prescribed manner.For this, the mixture is prepared from cereals (dhanya) and vinegar(amla) obtained from citrus fruits. Oryza sativa, citrus rotundus etc are some of the ingredients of dhanyamla. Herbal oil may or may not apply on the body depends on patient’s condition. Then the dhanyamla is poured over the body in luke warm condition as a continuous stream. The duration of this treatment may vary from 30-45 minute depends on patients condition. Dhanyamla can be done partially\fully as per physicians instruction.

The term “kati” refers to low back region.In this procedure the warm medicated oil is retained for a specific period of time in the low back area. A completely sealed wall boundary made with the paste of black gram powder in the lumbo-sacral area. The luke warm medicated oil is then poured into the space inside the walled boundary in a constant and continuous stream and retained there for a particular period of time. When it cools down , it is squeezed out with cotton gauge and the procedure should repeat for few time . The duration of this treatment may vary from 30-45 minutes depends on patient’s condition.

The term “Uras” means chest region , “Vasti” means to hold. It is a procedure whereby warm medicated oil is retained for a specific period of time in the chest region . A completely sealed wall boundary is made with the paste of black gram paste in the chest region. The lukewarm medicated oil is then poured into the space inside the walled boundary in a constant and continuous stream and retained there for a specific period of time. When it cools down , it is squeezed out with cotton gauge and the procedure should repeat for few times. The duration may vary depends upon the patients condition.

Greeva vasti

The term ‘’Greeva’’ means neck,”and vasti means to hold .This is a specialized ayurvedic treatment in which warm medicated oil is retained inside a boundary made with paste of black gram powder over the neck region for a particular duration. The patient is made to lie on his/her back on the droni/massage table. A rectangular or circular sealed walled boundary made of black gram dough is built on the neck region . Make it sure that the boundary should be of leak-proof. Then the luke warm medicated oil is poured into it. The oil should retain there for a particular period of time. When it cools down, it is squeezed out with cotton gauze and the procedure should repeat for few times. The healing properties of herbal oils used for this treatment deeply cleanses and enriches the blood, builds and maintains strong muscle and connective tissues and lubricates the joints keeping them flexible and pain free.

This is one among the common forms of keraleeya ayurveda chikitsa. In this warm medicated oil is squeezed on the whole body or affected area with simultaneous soft massage. In this cloth dipped in lukewarm medicated oil is squeezed over the patient’s body uniformly and then the oil rubbed smoothly over the body of the patient by therapists on either side.The duration is decided by the physician after detecting the body constitution of the patient.

Udwartanam (Herbal powder massage)

In this treatment the massage is done with the help of herbal powders in the opposite direction of hair follicles. Dry herbs are cleaned, dried and powdered. This powder is then heated mildly and used for massage in upward stroking. By this the blood circulation increases, opens the channels and effectively stimulate the break down of the stored subcutaneous fat by improving the basal metabolic rate.The duration may vary from 45 to 60 minutes
